The new NCPA Evening Symposium i.c.w.  Akoesticum Talent Programme (ATP) for Chamber musicians and NCPA partner ArtEZ Conservatoire, Health and Music will be held on October 27.

This NCPA evening symposium will reflect on – and present the results of –the workshop of the same name held for young chamber music musicians during the afternoon. This workshop (ATP participants only)  will reveal the impact and relevance of the ‘moving’ body for achieving optimal interaction whilst playing in a music ensemble. The workshop will be led by two international artists, Libertad Pozo Rodriguez (ESP) and Raf de Groote (BE), both experts in the fields of dance and music and somatic practice and the Franklin Method.  They were invited to work together for the first time in the workshop to facilitate the discovery of the impact and relevance of the ‘moving’ body when optimal interaction in a music ensemble is desired.

Can an increased awareness of the body acquired through practicing improvisation and body-mapping affect ensemble playing? Can this foster synergy between performers? To what extent does moving together support sensitivity and synchronicity when performing music together?  Through collective commitment, playful exercises, and the use of each other’s physicality and artistry, this workshop will stimulate and strive to enrich your ability to relate to fellow musicians whilst practicing and performing.

In addition, the practical work of Pozo Rodriguez and de Groote will be supported by theories in cognitive science presented by Derrick Brown (USA). Brown is currently pursuing his doctorate degree at Radboud University, Donders Institute for Brain Cognition and Behavior in Nijmegen. He will contextualize the practical work done in the workshop by outlining related research currently being undertaken in music duets, groups and ensembles. The evening will be rounded off by a discussion of the evening’s content between participants, artists and audience.
